47 William Street

We've come a long way, baby! We first saw the house at 47 William Street in New Haven in June of 2004. We finally purchased it on September 27, 2004. We knew the house needed a lot of cosmetic work plus a good deal of upgrading, but we thought it would be a good investment for us. We also understood it would give us the financial freedom to work less stressful jobs with virtually no drive-time commuting, as well as the opportunity to live in a city we had admired for a long time.

We lived in New Haven, mostly while working on the house, for just over 3 years. It was a healthy choice for us and we went from commuting a total of 650 miles per week to our jobs by car to no car commuting since we used the train and eventually walked to our jobs. And walking was pretty much 6 to 7 days a week for everything from work to picking up groceries to going out on the town. Most importantly, selling our expensive house in the suburbs and buying a much lesser valued fixer upper in the heart of the city taught us some important lessons about quality of life. Getting to ditch the high stress and long commute for laid back but lesser paying jobs was a luxury - it let us travel, have massive amounts of leisure time and gave us the freedom we needed to fix up this house and turn it into a lucrative income property.
